USA Hockey Adopts Changes to Coaching Requirements

Submitted by MAHA:

At the meeting of its Board of Directors on Saturday, June 10, 2017, USA Hockey adopted recommended changes to the Coaching Education requirements which were last updated in 2009.

Some of the changes were editorial, removing items which were obsolete, or consolidating some language.

There were two significant changes.

First, effective with the coming season, coaches cannot be placed on a team roster until they have completed the Age Specific Online Module for that team’s age classification. This means that they cannot participate with their team until the module is completed. The rationale behind this should be fairly clear – the modules are a low-cost method of training coaches in age-specific (ADM) knowledge and training techniques. It made little sense to allow coaches to wait until November, December, or even January in some cases, to complete the online class, which is always available and can be taken at whatever pace the coach desires. Ideally, this new requirement will mean better-trained coaches for our players.

Second, USA Hockey affiliate organizations, such as the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association, were formally empowered to enforce an earlier date (before Dec. 31) for the completion of any coaching clinic requirements.

Jack Witt, Michigan Coach-in-Chief, will update the MAHA Board of Directors on these changes and their impact in Michigan during the July MAHA meeting in Traverse City.
